Faith Alive Tabernacle
Independent
African Heritage Christianity
Faith Alive Tabernacle is an independent house church ministry in the tradition of African Heritage Christianity — hence the "AHC" in our website address. Our U.S. legacy begins with the 1920s founding of the African Orthodox Church (AOC) by Bishop George Alexander McGuire. The AOC was initially associated with Anglican and Episcopal church traditions alongside Marcus Garvey's “Back to Africa” movement.

Later there emerged from the AOC the AOCC -- the African Orthodox Catholic Church.  More inclusive than the AOC, the AOCC supports the ordination of women priests and its liturgy includes the African rite of libations to  ancestors.

The AOCC was inaugurated in the 1980s in Atlanta, GA under the leadership of Archbishop John H. Lewis III, at St. Augustine-Imani Temple on Larkin Street near historic Spelman College. In 2003 worship services continued under the auspices of Faith Alive Tabernacle at 460 Euclid Terrace in Atlanta's Little Five Points.

Founded as a house church by the Rev. Dr. Josephine Jackson-Smith in May of 1988, Faith Alive Tabernacle became an AOCC church in November 1999.  Over the years the church outgrew affiliation with the AOCC and now identifies as an independent African Heritage Christianity, celebrating the Catholic mass in black church worship style and occasionally inculturating African ceremonial rites such as libations to ancestors.
